DECATUR, IL… State Representative Regan Deering (R-Decatur) released the following statement after the House of Representatives heard nearly 400 bills during third reading deadline week last week.
Rep. Deering is working every day to advance good bills that will positively affect Illinoisans and defeat bad bills, which will put onerous mandates on residents and infringe on their freedoms.
A bill that will bring positive impacts to Illinois, HB 2409, cosponsored by Deering, is a measure that works to prohibit the sale of firefighting personal protective clothing that contains PFAS, a cancer-causing chemical that is found in the turnout gear worn to protect firefighters.
Deering also backed HB 3148, a measure to save consumers money by prohibiting additional fees on consumers who request physical copies of invoices or statements on services they receive.
“Every day I am working to help families, and I am proud of my work to save consumers money, keep our first responders safe, and make the lives of Illinoisans better,” said Rep. Deering. “Both of these measures work for the people of Illinois, not against them. As the voice of over 108,000 people, I will continue to advocate for good, helpful, legislative pieces like these, not matters that continue to add burdens to the plates of hardworking Illinoisans,” said Rep. Deering.
One of the bad bills passed by the Illinois House this past week includes HB 1237, which seeks to further erode local control and impose expensive mandates on schools that could drive up property taxes. The bill would ban certain mascots and will require at least 90 school districts across Illinois to make expensive changes like changing their logo or mascot to be in accordance with state law.
Among the worst of all the bills passed was HB 3564, a measure that disincentivizes timely rental payments by limiting and capping late fees, prohibits move-in fees and any fees collected before the start of tenancy, and disallows landlords to charge more than $20 for a background check conducted.
“Although not all of the nearly 400 bills passed are “bad bills”, too many are,” said Rep. Deering. “Illinoisans aren’t concerned with frivolous matters like banning mascots, they’re worried about the high taxes, rising cost of gas and groceries, and the continuously overreaching arm of the State of Illinois. We have to do better,” concluded Deering.
