SPRINGFIELD, IL… State Representative Regan Deering (R-Decatur) issued the following release in opposition to the passage of HB 2827 out of the House Education Policy Committee, as the legislation had over 41,000 witness slips in opposition.
HB 2827 makes changes to homeschool policy and mandates that non-public elementary and secondary schools register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Also, the Homeschool Act requires homeschools to fill out a Homeschool Declaration Form or risk being considered truant and face fines and imprisonment.
“I am disappointed in the Education Policy Committee’s decision to advance this legislation when over 41,000 witnesses have slipped in opposition to the bill,” said Rep. Deering. “This legislation sets up unfunded mandates, further burdens school administrators and Regional Offices of Education (ROEs), puts energy into a non-problem, and strips freedom from students who learn differently.”
Although overwhelming opposition, House Democrats voted to pass the legislation through committee, without any Republican support.
