DECATUR, IL… State Representative Regan Deering (R-Decatur) issued the following statement after Governor Pritzker signed SB 3341 into law, allowing minors to obtain contraceptive services and supplies without the consent of a parent or guardian.
“As a mother of two daughters, I am appalled that Governor Pritzker decided to sign this bill into law,” said Rep. Deering. “When it comes to a child’s health and overall well-being, parents need to be involved. This legislation strips away parental oversight purely for political gain. Intentionally removing parents from this conversation can lead to harmful consequences that may have a profound effect on a young girl’s life.”
Deering said her biggest concern is the safety of young girls and the lack of parental involvement.
“Beyond undermining parents’ rights, this law could also make it easier for predators to conceal abuse,” continued Deering. “While Illinois Democrats claim this law will expand access to care, it also has the potential to allow sexual abuse to go undetected because parents are removed from the conversation.”
The bill received no Republican votes and takes effect on January 1.
