Deering: Illinois Families Feel the Cost of Living, Not Pritzker’s Spin

DECATUR, IL… In response to the Governor’s Office releasing a list of self-congratulatory accomplishments, State Representative Regan Deering (R-Decatur) issued the following statement to inject a dose of reality into the conversation:

“Governor Pritzker might be taking a victory lap in press releases, but families in my district are struggling to keep their heads above water,” said Rep. Deering. “You can’t spin your way out of the fact that life in Illinois is becoming unaffordable for the average family.”

While the Governor focuses on national headlines and his own political ambitions, here is the reality facing our communities:

  • Illinois homeowners pay the highest property taxes in the nation. This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a barrier that is crushing the American Dream for young families and seniors on fixed incomes.
  • From groceries to utilities, the ‘Pritzker Premium’ on the cost of living means families are stretching every dollar and still falling behind.
  • We carry the highest combined state and local tax burden in the country. The government is taking a larger share of your family’s income here than anywhere else in America.
  • Despite all the talk of ‘equity,’ black unemployment in Illinois remains among the highest in the nation. This is a failure of policy, not a badge of honor.
  • Families aren’t leaving because of the weather; they are leaving because they can’t afford the government Pritzker has built.

Governor Pritzker is happy to funnel billions of our tax dollars into Chicago bailouts and passion projects while our local priorities—like safe neighborhoods, lower energy bills, and honest property tax relief—are ignored.

“Local families don’t care about the Governor’s White House dreams. They care about whether they can afford to stay in the state they call home. It is time Springfield started respecting that,” concluded Deering.
